What Is Yellow Fever and What Are the Symptoms?

Yellow fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. The World Health Organization estimates it causes around 30,000 deaths a year, the majority in Africa.

Most people infected experience a self-limiting illness with fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea and vomiting lasting three to four days. Around 15% enter a second, toxic phase where the liver is affected, causing jaundice, and where mortality can reach 50% without supportive care.

There is no antiviral treatment. The vaccine is the only reliable protection, and a single dose provides lifelong immunity for the majority of travellers.

Key benefits

Why Is Yellow Fever Vaccination Important?

Beyond personal protection, vaccination matters for an administrative reason many travellers underestimate: proof of vaccination. An unvaccinated traveller entering a country that requires it can be refused entry at the border or quarantined on arrival.

The ICVP issued after your yellow fever injection at Chemitex is a standardised WHO document and the only certificate accepted by immigration authorities worldwide. It is valid for life under current WHO regulations, though some countries retain their own entry rules.

If you are travelling to or through an endemic region, getting vaccinated at a registered centre before you go is not optional.

Eligibility

Countries That Require a Yellow Fever Vaccine

Entry requirements vary and can change, so always check the official guidance for your specific destination before travelling. As a general guide, certificate requirements fall into two categories.

Certificate required if arriving from an endemic country:

A number of Asian and Pacific destinations require an ICVP if you are travelling via a country with risk of yellow fever transmission, even if you have no direct exposure planned. This includes India, Indonesia, Nepal and Thailand.

Travel health guidance is updated frequently. We recommend checking the NaTHNaC TravelHealthPro country pages alongside the FCDO travel advisory for your destination.

Mandatory certificate required for all travellers

Countries including Angola, Brazil (some states), Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda, Cameroon, Ecuador, French Guiana, Gabon and many others across Central and West Africa and Amazonian South America require proof of vaccination from all travellers regardless of origin.

Our Yellow Fever Vaccine Service at Chemitex Pharmacy

Chemitex Pharmacy holds official registration as a Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, which means we are authorised by the NHS to administer the yellow fever vaccine and issue the ICVP. Not all pharmacies can do this.

Our travel health service covers the full picture: a pre-travel consultation to assess your itinerary and health history, the yellow fever immunisation itself, and the signed certificate issued the same day.

We also offer the full range of travel vaccines alongside yellow fever, so you can consolidate your pre-travel health appointments in one place.

How It Works

How the Treatment Works

[Step 01]

Book an Appointment

Book online via our Treat Local booking system, call us on +44 20 7272 4869, or walk in during opening hours. We will send you a short pre-consultation health questionnaire to complete beforehand, which keeps the appointment efficient.

[Step 02]

Attend Your Consultation

Your appointment begins with a travel health consultation. We review your itinerary, vaccination history, current medications and any relevant medical conditions to confirm the yellow fever vaccine is appropriate for you. Contraindications are rare but include certain immune-compromised patients, infants under nine months and those with thymus disorders.

[Step 03]

Receive Treatment

If the vaccine is clinically appropriate, we administer it during the same visit. The ICVP is completed, signed and stamped at the pharmacy and handed to you before you leave. The certificate becomes valid ten days after vaccination.

Side Effects

Common Yellow Fever Vaccine Side Effects

The yellow fever vaccine is well tolerated by the vast majority of travellers. The most common reactions are mild and resolve within a few days.

Common (affecting up to 1 in 10)

Soreness, redness or swelling at the injection site; mild headache; low-grade fever; muscle aches and fatigue in the first few days after vaccination.

Uncommon but important to know

Rarely, the vaccine can cause a serious reaction called yellow fever vaccine-associated viscerotropic disease (YEL-AVD) or neurotropic disease (YEL-AND).

These are extremely uncommon, occurring in fewer than 1 in 250,000 doses, and are more likely in those with thymus disorders, certain immune conditions, or adults over 60 receiving their first dose.

If you develop a high fever, severe headache, jaundice, confusion or difficulty breathing within two weeks of vaccination, seek medical attention and mention you have recently had the yellow fever jab. Our team will discuss your individual risk during the pre-travel consultation.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a yellow fever vaccine if I am only transiting through an endemic country?

Transit rules vary by country and airport. Some nations require proof of vaccination even for airside transits lasting just a few hours. Always check the specific entry requirements for every country on your itinerary, including transit stops, before travelling.

Book at least ten days before departure. The ICVP is only valid from day ten after your injection, which is when the immunity is considered established for international entry purposes.

A replacement ICVP can only be issued by a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre that holds a record of your original vaccination. We can reissue certificates for patients vaccinated at Chemitex Pharmacy. For vaccines administered elsewhere, contact the original issuing centre.

The vaccine can be given to children from nine months of age. It is generally not recommended for infants under six months and should be considered with caution for those aged six to eight months. We will confirm suitability during the pre-travel consultation.

The vaccine is a live attenuated virus and is generally avoided during pregnancy unless the travel risk is unavoidable. It is considered safe to administer while breastfeeding. Our pharmacist will assess your individual circumstances and advise accordingly during your consultation.
