Signs

Signs You Need Earwax Removal

You don’t always notice a build-up until it’s causing real problems. Watch out for:

When to seek medical help (Red Flags)

Get medical help first if your hearing dropped suddenly or worsened rapidly; you have one-sided tinnitus, pulsatile tinnitus, recurrent vertigo, ear discharge, persistent earache, or facial weakness/numbness.

Our Professional Earwax Removal Service in Islington

A GPhC-registered pharmacist examines and treats your ears. They are trained in microsuction by Clear Clinics, an independent training provider.

We use two methods based on what works best for you: microsuction, the preferred clinical standard, and manual removal when needed. Both are safe, fast, and done without the mess of water-based irrigation.

No GP referral. No long wait. Walk in or book ahead.

When We Can't Treat You

Tell us if you have a perforated eardrum, have had ear surgery, have an infection, have discharge, have one hearing ear, have had a bad reaction to removal, have a foreign object, or are immunosuppressed/diabetic with an earache. We may refer you.

Microsuction is the method most recommended by UK audiologists. It’s precise, dry, and takes minutes.

What to Expect

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your appointment at Chemitex Pharmacy is private and takes around 15 to 30 minutes in total. Here’s what happens:

Ear examination first

Before any treatment, the clinician checks both ears with an otoscope. If one ear is clear, you’ll only pay for the one that needs treating.

Treatment is quick

The microsuction probe produces a low vacuum that draws wax out without any flushing. Most patients feel only a mild vibration or sound.

You'll know if it's worked

Hearing improvement is often immediate. If wax is deeply impacted, a second visit may occasionally be needed.

You won’t be rushed, and you’re welcome to ask questions at any point.

Benefit

Who Can Benefit from Earwax Removal?

Adults, Children, and Elderly Patients

Earwax build-up is common at all ages. Older adults are particularly prone because earwax gets drier and harder to shift naturally as we age. Children can also experience build-up, and microsuction is safe for younger patients.

Hearing Aid Users and Swimmers

Hearing aid users face a higher risk of earwax buildup. This happens because the device partially blocks the ear canal, stopping natural wax from moving out. Regular removal every few months is usually recommended. Swimmers often experience similar problems, as water softens wax and can push it deeper into the canal.

How Often Should You Remove Earwax?

Don’t follow a fixed schedule. Only book when you have symptoms. Hearing aid users should ask their audiologist to check ears during regular aid servicing.

Don’t try to remove wax yourself with cotton buds. They push wax further in more often than they remove it. If your ears feel blocked, book an appointment rather than attempting home removal.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Does earwax removal hurt?

Microsuction is not painful for most patients. You may hear a loud suction sound and feel slight vibration, but discomfort is uncommon if wax isn’t severely impacted.

Use drops only for 3-5 days to soften wax. Do not use them if you know or think you have a perforated eardrum.

Tell us before you book. While microsuction is safer than water-based methods, a perforation changes how we perform the procedure. We may need to refer you to a specialist for assessment.

The full appointment, including assessment and treatment, usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes. Some straightforward cases take less.

NICE recommends this in primary care, but availability varies by area. Check with your GP first. If the wait is long or unavailable, we offer private appointments.
