Hepatitis B is a viral infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It attacks the liver and can cause both short-term illness and long-term chronic disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer.
The virus is significantly more contagious than HIV. It spreads through contact with infected blood, sexual fluids or breast milk, and can survive outside the body on surfaces for up to seven days.
Common routes of transmission include unprotected sex, sharing needles or drug-use equipment, mother-to-baby transmission during childbirth, and exposure to unsterilised medical or dental instruments abroad. You cannot contract Hepatitis B from casual contact, coughing or sharing food.
Many people with acute Hepatitis B have no symptoms at all, which is one reason it spreads so easily. When symptoms do appear, they typically begin 1 to 6 months after exposure.
Around 5 to 10% of adults who contract Hepatitis B develop a chronic infection. Without treatment, chronic Hepatitis B can silently damage the liver over decades before serious complications emerge.
Vaccination is the most reliable protection against Hepatitis B. The vaccine is safe, effective and provides long-lasting immunity in the vast majority of people who complete the course.
For travellers, the risk is real. Receiving medical care abroad, getting tattoos or piercings, or having any unplanned sexual contact in a high-prevalence country can expose you to the virus without warning. Healthcare workers face occupational exposure that cannot always be predicted or avoided.
Chronic Hepatitis B is the leading cause of liver cancer globally. Vaccination prevents that chain from starting.
Hepatitis B is highly endemic across large parts of Africa, Asia and the Pacific. For some countries, proof of Hepatitis B vaccination is required for certain visa categories, particularly for healthcare workers, long-term residents and medical or dental professionals. In other destinations, the risk level makes vaccination a firm clinical recommendation regardless of legal requirement.
If you are travelling to any of these areas, particularly for work, volunteering or longer stays, speak to our pharmacist before you travel. We will advise on the right course and timeline based on your destination and departure date.
Book online via our booking portal or call us on 0207 272 4869. Walk-ins are accepted, but an appointment guarantees your time slot. We offer morning and Saturday appointments to fit around work.
Your pharmacist will review your medical history, any previous vaccinations and your travel or occupational risk before administering the vaccine. The consultation is included in the appointment, not an add-on.
The injection is given into the upper arm muscle. Before you leave, we confirm your follow-up dose dates and provide a vaccination record. For travellers on a tight timeline, an accelerated schedule may be appropriate.
Anyone travelling to a country with high Hepatitis B prevalence should be vaccinated, especially for trips longer than four weeks or those involving contact with local medical services. The risk increases with adventure travel, volunteering in healthcare settings and any unplanned medical treatment abroad.
Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all healthcare professionals with potential exposure to blood or bodily fluids. This includes doctors, nurses, dentists, midwives, phlebotomists and support staff who handle clinical waste. Many employers require documented immunity before you begin clinical placement. We can vaccinate and provide the written record your occupational health department needs.
Sharing needles, syringes or any drug-use equipment carries a high risk of Hepatitis B transmission. Vaccination is an important harm-reduction measure, alongside access to clean equipment.
People with multiple sexual partners, those entering a new relationship where Hepatitis B status is unknown, and men who have sex with men are all groups where vaccination is clinically recommended. The NHS recommends Hepatitis B vaccination for these groups through sexual health services, but if you’ve not yet been vaccinated, we can help.
If a family member or household contact has been diagnosed with chronic Hepatitis B, unvaccinated people in close contact are at risk. Vaccination alongside Hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) may be required for high-risk exposures; our pharmacist will advise on next steps.
Babies born to mothers with Hepatitis B need vaccination at birth and at subsequent intervals. If your child missed the neonatal course or you are uncertain about their vaccination history, we can check and complete the schedule.
Those with pre-existing liver conditions or Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are at greater risk of serious complications if they contract Hepatitis B. Vaccination is recommended for both groups by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).
Beyond clinical healthcare, Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for prison staff, mortuary workers, staff in facilities for people with learning disabilities and those working with blood samples or biological specimens in laboratory settings.
We offer the full Hepatitis B vaccine course at £30 per dose at Chemitex Pharmacy, 332 Hornsey Road, Islington, N7 7HE. The standard course is three doses given at 0, 1 and 6 months, providing long-term immunity in around 95% of adults who complete it.
For travellers with limited time before departure, an accelerated course is available: doses at 0, 1 and 2 months, with a 12-month booster to confirm long-term immunity. A rapid schedule (0, 7 and 21 days) may be appropriate for genuine last-minute travel; your pharmacist will discuss suitability with you.
The Hepatitis B vaccine is well tolerated and serious reactions are rare. The most common side effect is short-term soreness or redness at the injection site, which usually settles within 48 hours.
Some people experience a mild fever, headache or general fatigue in the day or two after the jab. These are signs the immune system is responding and do not indicate a problem.
Uncommon side effects include nausea and mild joint or muscle aches. Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) are very rare, occurring in fewer than 1 in a million doses. Our team is trained in anaphylaxis management and you will be asked to remain in the pharmacy briefly after the injection as a precaution.
Our clinical team has vaccinated patients across the full range of travel health and occupational scenarios, with the knowledge to tailor your dosing schedule accurately.
We keep our Hepatitis B vaccine price straightforward. No hidden consultation fees, no inflated package prices.
If your departure is close, we can structure your vaccination course to give maximum protection before you travel.
We rarely have a long wait. Call ahead or book online and we will usually find you a slot within days.

Got some friendly and super quick travel vaccines here as I realised 5 days before travel. The pharmacist was soooo lovely and made the whole appointment easy. She was very informed and answered all my questions with confidence. Will be coming back for any future vaccine needs for sure as the price was much cheaper than the other ones in the area

I came into the chemist on Friday and I was very impressed by your colleague Fiona and how skilled she is with customers, particularly those who are vulnerable. She offered reassurance, was informative, and showed kindness and patience. She is an asset to your business.

Great little local pharmacy with wide selection and convenient hours, always has what I need in stock. Great customer service and advice from a lovely bubbly young woman who works on the till. Would recommend.

I needed to get a Covid and Flu vaccination together, before traveling, and Chemitex were able to give me a next day appointment and a good price.
The service was excellent and friendly.
I thoroughly recommend.

Studies show immunity persists for at least 20 years in most adults who complete the full three-dose course, and protection is likely lifelong for the majority.
The vaccine is not routinely recommended during pregnancy, but if the risk of exposure is high, a healthcare professional may advise vaccination. Discuss this with your pharmacist before booking.
A blood test is not required before vaccination but is recommended if you have previously been vaccinated abroad and cannot confirm your immunity. Your pharmacist will advise based on your history.
No. They protect against two distinct viruses with different transmission routes. A combined Hepatitis A and B vaccine is available at Chemitex for £55, which may be more appropriate for travellers needing both.
Yes, in most cases. Hepatitis B can be given alongside Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Tetanus and several other travel vaccines. Your pharmacist will confirm what can be co-administered at your consultation.
