Plan Overview

Lose Weight Safely with a Personalised Weight Loss Plan

Weight loss isn’t one-size-fits-all. At our Islington weight management clinic, each patient first meets with a pharmacist for a structured assessment. Only after this do we provide any prescriptions.

Pharmacist-Led Weight Management

Every consultation is led by Dipesh Jogi, our GPhC-registered superintendent pharmacist (GPhC 2073384). He is not a remote prescriber or an automated questionnaire. You receive a personal clinical assessment. You’ll get a clear view of your options and a treatment plan based on your health history.

Tailored Treatment Plans

We don’t prescribe Mounjaro or Wegovy by default. Your BMI, health issues, meds, and weight loss goals guide our treatment recommendations. Some patients do better with an oral option. Others find a weekly injectable works best for them.

Ongoing Support Throughout Your Journey

Dose adjustments, side-effect queries, and progress reviews are part of the programme. You’re not left to manage a new medication on your own after the first appointment.

Injectable Weight Loss Treatments

Injectable GLP-1 and dual GIP/GLP-1 agonists act like gut hormones that control appetite and blood sugar. They slow down gastric emptying and lower hunger, helping patients eat less without feeling deprived. Clinical trials show average weight loss of 15-22% over 68-72 weeks, based on the treatment.

Clinical results show average weight loss as follows:

  • 20.9% for tirzepatide (15 mg)
  • 14.9% for semaglutide (2.4 mg)
  • 13.6% for oral semaglutide (varies by individual response).

Tirzepatide is available on the NHS in England for specific patients. Check with your GP if you qualify, as local availability and participation can vary by area.

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)

Mounjaro is the only licensed weight management treatment in the UK. It targets GIP and GLP-1 receptors. In trials, patients lost 20-22.5% of body weight on a 15mg dose. It’s injected weekly, starting at 2.5 mg and increasing over 20 weeks. It may reduce oral contraceptive effectiveness; use barrier methods or non-oral options. Pregnancy must be avoided.

Wegovy (Semaglutide)

Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist approved for long-term weight management in the UK. It has the same active ingredient as Ozempic, but in a higher dose. It also has a different licensed use. Patients start at 0.25 mg and increase over 16 weeks to the 2.4 mg maintenance dose. Avoid semaglutide in pregnancy; stop treatment two months before conceiving.

Ozempic (Semaglutide)

Ozempic contains the same active ingredient as Wegovy but is licensed for Type 2 diabetes management in the UK, not weight loss. It is sometimes prescribed off-label for weight management by clinicians.

Oral Weight Loss Treatments

Not every patient wants to inject. Oral options offer a needle-free alternative and suit patients who prefer a tablet or capsule as part of their daily routine.

Wegovy Pill (Oral Semaglutide)

The oral form of semaglutide delivers the same GLP-1 mechanism as injectable Wegovy but in a once-daily tablet. It’s a good choice for patients seeking GLP-1 therapy benefits without injections. However, absorption is a bit lower than with injections.

Take on an empty stomach first thing in the morning with a small sip of water. Wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medications.

Orlistat Capsules

Orlistat blocks about one-third of dietary fat from being absorbed in the gut. This helps lower calorie intake without directly affecting appetite. Take it three times a day with meals that have fat. It works best with a lower-fat diet.

Mounjaro leads to more weight loss than Wegovy in direct comparisons. This is mainly due to its unique GIP receptor mechanism. Individual responses can vary a lot. The best choice depends on your health profile, not just on headline percentages.

Eligibility

Eligibility for Weight Management Treatment

Weight loss medications are supplied under a Patient Group Direction (PGD). Our pharmacist will confirm eligibility and medical suitability during your face-to-face consultation.

Who May Be Eligible

Who Is Not Suitable for Treatment

If you’re unsure whether you qualify, speak to our pharmacist before booking. We’ll give you a plain answer based on your health history.

Choosing Treatment

Which Weight Loss Treatment Is Right for You?

The honest answer is, it depends on your BMI, your health history, and how you’d prefer to take your medication.

Injectable vs Oral Weight Loss Medications

Injectable GLP-1 and dual GIP/GLP-1 treatments, like Mounjaro and Wegovy, lead to more weight loss than oral options. This is backed by clinical data. Injections are given once weekly, and the vast majority of patients adapt to the process comfortably after the first few doses.

Oral options like orlistat, Xenical, Alli, and oral semaglutide work well for patients who want to skip injections. They are also good for those just starting their weight management journey.

Orlistat needs you to lower dietary fat to control gastrointestinal side effects. Oral semaglutide gives the GLP-1 effect without needles. However, it has a bit lower bioavailability than the injectable version.

Our pharmacist will explain the differences during your consultation. They will consider your complete clinical picture instead of just choosing the most expensive or newest option.

Treatment Monitoring

Safety and Monitoring

These medicines are monitored closely (black triangle). Report side effects via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme. If you require surgery or sedation, inform your medical team beforehand.

Long-term use depends on response. If you haven’t lost 5% of weight six months after reaching your maximum dose, we will review your treatment.

Storage and Switching

Store medication at 2–8°C. Switching providers? Bring current details. We require a seven-day gap and may restart you at a lower dose for safety.

We write to your GP to inform them you have started treatment, ensuring your medical records remain complete and accurate.

Side Effects

Side Effects of Weight Loss Treatments

All weight loss medications carry a risk of side effects. Knowing what to expect helps patients stay on treatment and act on warning signs early.

GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists (Mounjaro, Wegovy, oral semaglutide):

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, and injection site reactions. Most are dose-dependent and improve as the body adjusts during the first four to eight weeks of treatment. Headache and fatigue are also reported, particularly during dose increases.
Rare but serious effects include pancreatitis and acute gallbladder disease. Patients must stop treatment and get medical help right away if they have severe, ongoing abdominal pain that doesn’t go away.

Orlistat (Xenical, Alli):

Side effects are primarily gastrointestinal and are directly linked to fat intake. Fatty or oily stools, more bowel movements, gas, and urgent urges to go can occur if you don’t cut back on dietary fat while treating the problem. Long-term use may lower the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. So, supplementation is often recommended during extended use.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a GP referral to access the weight loss clinic at Chemitex Pharmacy?

No referral is required. Book directly with us, attend your pharmacist consultation, and if eligible, treatment can start the same appointment.

Most patients notice reduced appetite within the first two weeks. Visible weight loss typically becomes apparent by weeks four to eight, with the strongest results at the maintenance dose after three to four months.

Yes, for most patients. Both Mounjaro and Wegovy are designed for long-term use alongside sustained lifestyle changes. Your pharmacist will review progress at each dose stage and advise whether continuation is appropriate.

Contact us directly. Our pharmacist will advise whether your symptoms require a dose reduction, a brief break from treatment, or a referral to your GP. Side effect management is part of the service.

Possibly, but some combinations require care. GLP-1 treatments can interact with insulin and other diabetes medications; orlistat affects absorption of certain drugs including ciclosporin. Always declare your full medication list at your consultation so any interactions are identified before prescribing.
