Meningitis is an infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The bacterial form, caused by Neisseria meningitidis, is the most dangerous and can become life-threatening within 24 hours.
The ACWY strains spread through respiratory droplets and close contact. Sharing drinks, coughing, or prolonged face-to-face contact in crowded environments are the most common routes of transmission. Carriers with no symptoms can still pass the bacteria on.
Certain settings amplify the risk considerably. University halls, pilgrimage gatherings, and travel in sub-Saharan Africa or the Middle East create the conditions where outbreaks are documented year after year.
Early symptoms can be mistaken for flu. The infection progresses fast, so knowing the signs matters.
If you see a non-blanching rash, call 999 immediately. Do not wait to see if it spreads.
The MenACWY vaccine protects against four serogroups of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W, and Y. These account for the majority of meningitis cases seen in travellers and university students in the UK.
Vaccination doesn’t just protect you. It reduces carriage in the throat, which cuts transmission to people around you who may be at greater risk.
Immunity builds within 7 to 10 days of a single dose and typically lasts around five years, though travellers or pilgrims heading to high-risk areas may require a booster if their previous dose was more than five years ago.
Several countries either require proof of vaccination for entry or carry a high enough burden of disease that vaccination is strongly recommended by UK travel health guidelines.
Saudi Arabia requires a valid MenACWY certificate for all Hajj and Umrah visa applicants. The certificate must be dated no more than three years before travel (or five years for polysaccharide vaccines, though conjugate vaccines are now standard). Other countries may require proof of vaccination for long-stay visas or certain border crossings.
Always check the latest advice from the NHS Fit for Travel or TRAVAX database for your specific itinerary, as recommendations change. We include a travel health consultation with every vaccination appointment.
Getting vaccinated at Chemitex is straightforward. Here’s what the process looks like from start to finish.
Use our online booking system or call us on 0207 272 4869. We offer appointments Monday to Friday, 9am to 6:30pm, and Saturday mornings. Walk-ins are welcome subject to availability, but booking ahead means no wait.
You’ll meet with a trained pharmacist in our private consultation room. We’ll go through your medical history, travel plans, or other relevant circumstances and confirm the vaccine is appropriate for you. There’s no GP referral needed.
The vaccine is given as a single intramuscular injection, usually in the upper arm. The appointment typically takes 15 to 20 minutes in total. For travel or visa purposes, we can provide documentation confirming vaccination has been administered.
Students moving into halls of residence face a measurably higher risk of meningococcal disease. Living in close proximity, sharing spaces, and socialising in large groups creates ideal conditions for transmission. The NHS routine MenACWY programme covers teenagers at school, but students who missed their dose or who are now over 25 are not automatically eligible on the NHS. A private vaccination at Chemitex costs £45 and takes under 20 minutes.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health mandates MenACWY vaccination for all Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. Historical outbreaks at these gatherings, particularly with the W135 strain, led to the requirement being made compulsory. Visas will not be issued without a valid vaccination certificate. We vaccinate pilgrims throughout the year and can provide documentation for your visa application.
Anyone travelling to sub-Saharan Africa’s Meningitis Belt or other regions with documented MenACWY outbreaks should be vaccinated at least 2 weeks before departure. This includes overlanders, aid workers, gap year travellers, and those visiting family in affected regions. We include a personalised travel health consultation so you leave knowing exactly what protection you have in place.
The NHS MenACWY programme is delivered at school at around age 14. Some young people miss this through illness, absence, or changing schools. If you’re under 25 and haven’t had the vaccine, you may still be eligible on the NHS through your GP. If not, or if you’d prefer not to wait, we offer it privately at Chemitex for £45.
Individuals with no spleen (asplenia), a non-functioning spleen, complement deficiency, or those taking complement inhibitor medications such as eculizumab are at significantly higher risk of invasive meningococcal disease. Vaccination is strongly recommended for this group by UK clinical guidelines, along with regular boosters. Speak to your GP or contact us if you’re unsure of your status.
UKHSA guidelines may recommend vaccination for close contacts of a confirmed meningococcal case, depending on the serogroup involved. If you’ve been advised by a health protection team to seek vaccination, we can see you quickly with minimal delay.
Our MenACWY vaccination service is available year-round with no GP referral required. A single £45 appointment covers your clinical consultation, the vaccine, and any documentation needed for travel or visa applications. Same-week appointments are available most weeks.
The vaccine used is the MenACWY conjugate vaccine (Nimenrix or equivalent depending on current supply), administered as a single intramuscular injection. Appointments run 15 to 20 minutes and take place in a private consultation room. Documentation confirming vaccination is provided on request for travel or visa purposes.
The MenACWY vaccine has a well-established safety record. Side effects are generally mild and short-lived.
Serious allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) are rare, occurring in fewer than 1 in a million doses. We ask patients to remain for 15 minutes post-vaccination as standard practice, and our consultation room is prepared to manage any immediate reactions.
If symptoms persist beyond 48 hours or you develop a high fever, contact 111 or your GP.
We’re a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre, meaning travel health is part of our core offering year-round, not a seasonal add-on. Your MenACWY appointment is handled by a team with direct experience of travel health.
The price covers your consultation, the vaccine, and any documentation you need for visa or travel purposes. There are no separate charges for the travel health assessment.
Book directly with us and skip the wait. Most patients are seen within days of requesting an appointment.
Every appointment is carried out in a dedicated clinical space. Your consultation is confidential and uninterrupted.
We hold regular vaccine stock and can accommodate short-notice bookings for most patients.
For complex travel health needs, our on-site Independent Prescriber is available. This is uncommon in a community pharmacy setting and means more clinical flexibility when you need it.

Got some friendly and super quick travel vaccines here as I realised 5 days before travel. The pharmacist was soooo lovely and made the whole appointment easy. She was very informed and answered all my questions with confidence. Will be coming back for any future vaccine needs for sure as the price was much cheaper than the other ones in the area

I came into the chemist on Friday and I was very impressed by your colleague Fiona and how skilled she is with customers, particularly those who are vulnerable. She offered reassurance, was informative, and showed kindness and patience. She is an asset to your business.

Great little local pharmacy with wide selection and convenient hours, always has what I need in stock. Great customer service and advice from a lovely bubbly young woman who works on the till. Would recommend.

I needed to get a Covid and Flu vaccination together, before traveling, and Chemitex were able to give me a next day appointment and a good price.
The service was excellent and friendly.
I thoroughly recommend.

NHS MenACWY vaccination is available through GPs for eligible teenagers and some at-risk adults, but not routinely through pharmacies. We provide it privately for £45 for those who fall outside NHS eligibility, including travellers, pilgrims, and adults over 25.
Aim to be vaccinated at least 2 weeks before departure to give your immune system enough time to build a protective antibody response before you arrive at your destination.
Current UK guidance does not specifically contraindicate the conjugate MenACWY vaccine during pregnancy when the benefit outweighs the risk. Speak to your GP or midwife first, and our pharmacist will discuss this with you at your consultation.
A booster is recommended if your last dose was more than five years ago and you’re travelling to a high-risk area or attending Hajj or Umrah. Bring any records you have and we’ll confirm what you need at your appointment.
Yes. MenACWY can be given on the same day as most other travel vaccines, including hepatitis A, typhoid, and yellow fever. We plan your vaccination schedule at your consultation to make sure the timing and combination are appropriate for your trip.
