Podiatry is the clinical assessment and treatment of conditions affecting the feet, ankles and lower limbs. It includes routine nail care, corn removal, diabetic foot checks, and ingrown toenail management.
It’s not simply about comfort. Untreated foot problems can harm posture, gait, and mobility. This is especially true for older adults and those with diabetes. A small wound or pressure sore can worsen quickly.
Corns are small, hard patches of skin. They form from constant pressure or friction. You usually find them on the tops of toes or between them. They’re disproportionately painful for their size and won’t resolve without proper treatment.
Calluses form on larger areas like the heel, ball of the foot, or outer edge. This happens due to uneven weight distribution. They cause discomfort with prolonged standing and are prone to cracking if not managed.
We use salicylic acid for verruca treatment. However, this is contraindicated for patients with diabetes or peripheral arterial disease. In children, verrucas often resolve naturally.
When a nail edge grows into the skin fold alongside it, the result is pain, redness and often infection. Most cases respond to conservative management without the need for a surgical procedure.
Surface cracks around the heel rim are more than cosmetic. Deep fissures bleed, harbour bacteria and cause real pain with every step. They’re closely linked to dry skin, ill-fitting footwear and prolonged standing.
Thickened nails from injury, fungus, or poor circulation can be hard and even risky to cut at home. Professional reduction keeps them manageable and hygienic.
We can test a nail sample to check for a fungal infection before treatment. This is important because not all thickened or discoloured nails are caused by fungi.
Diabetes can harm circulation and nerve sensation. This means small skin breaks or pressure spots might be missed. If not noticed, they can quickly get worse. Regular professional assessment is an essential part of diabetic self-management.
Contact your GP or NHS 111 immediately for skin breaks/ulcers, redness, heat, swelling, discoloured skin, or new pain/numbness. These symptoms require urgent medical attention.
Note: People with diabetes are entitled to a free annual NHS foot check. Please prioritise this; our service provides routine care in between.
Not every patient has a specific complaint. Many simply find it physically difficult to care for their own feet due to age, reduced flexibility or limited reach. Scheduled maintenance appointments keep things under control.
Nails that are splitting, thickened, discoloured or just difficult to cut safely can be managed as part of a routine podiatry visit, with no referral or prior diagnosis needed.
At Chemitex Pharmacy, we handle most conditions in one visit. You won’t need a separate diagnostic session before receiving care. Nail treatments include routine trimming, thick nail reduction, fungal nail management and conservative ingrown toenail treatment, resolving the majority of cases without surgical intervention.
We treat skin issues by removing corns and reducing calluses and hard skin with special tools. For cracked heels and verrucas, we use methods tailored to each patient’s needs. Diabetic foot assessments check circulation, sensation, and skin health. Findings are noted and tracked over time.
For patients who cannot attend in person, mobile home visits are available. Each appointment offers clear aftercare advice. It also provides practical self-care tips to help you keep up your progress between sessions.

Book your appointment at Chemitex Pharmacy on Hornsey Road. New patients should allow 30 to 45 minutes. You’ll be seen in a private clinical space by a qualified foot health practitioner.
Your practitioner examines the skin, nails, circulation and any sites of pain or pressure. For diabetic patients, this includes a sensation check across the foot using standardised tools.
Our Foot Health Practitioners (FHPs) will explain their findings and recommend routine care. We use single-use blades and vacuum-autoclave sterilised instruments for your safety.
The vast majority of podiatry treatments are non-surgical and completed within the same session. This includes corn removal, callus reduction, nail work, verruca treatment and conservative management of ingrown toenails.
Before you leave, you’ll receive clear instructions covering wound care, footwear choices and what to monitor in the days following treatment.
If ongoing management is needed, your practitioner will suggest how often to review your condition. Most patients return every 6 to 12 weeks.
Adults with ongoing foot pain, skin issues, or nail problems that haven’t improved with OTC treatments.
Children (Ages 5+) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian for the duration of the appointment.
Older adults who struggle with foot care at home, especially if they have limited reach or flexibility.
People with diabetes who require regular, documented foot monitoring as part of managing their condition.
People with thick or difficult toenails that cannot be safely cut without specialist instruments.
Patients with corns or calluses causing pain that affects daily walking or activity.
Anyone needing routine foot care who prefers professional maintenance to self-managing at home.
Patients with limited mobility who struggle to see or reach their feet effectively.
Home visit patients receive care from DBS-checked practitioners carrying photo ID. All instruments are transported in sealed, sterile packaging for home safety.
Regular professional assessment identifies problems early, when they’re straightforward to treat. Many conditions worsen significantly if left.
Removing corns, reducing calluses, and clearing ingrown toenails provides quick relief. Self-treatment often doesn’t achieve this safely or effectively.
Foot pain changes how you walk. Resolving it reduces compensatory strain on the knees, hips and lower back over time.
Professionally maintained nails are less prone to ingrowing, infection and splitting. This matters more when circulation is already compromised.
Identifying high-pressure areas helps a lot. Recommending footwear changes and advising on self-care between appointments also cuts down on recurrence.
Documented assessments create a clear record of foot health. This helps with overall diabetes management and makes sure any changes are noticed.
You get an honest explanation of what’s causing the problem and what will actually help, not just treatment of the surface symptom.
Scheduled appointments help patients with ongoing needs maintain stable foot health all year.
Your initial appointment includes assessment and treatment in the same session, so there’s no wait for a separate diagnostic visit before care begins.

Got some friendly and super quick travel vaccines here as I realised 5 days before travel. The pharmacist was soooo lovely and made the whole appointment easy. She was very informed and answered all my questions with confidence. Will be coming back for any future vaccine needs for sure as the price was much cheaper than the other ones in the area

I came into the chemist on Friday and I was very impressed by your colleague Fiona and how skilled she is with customers, particularly those who are vulnerable. She offered reassurance, was informative, and showed kindness and patience. She is an asset to your business.

Great little local pharmacy with wide selection and convenient hours, always has what I need in stock. Great customer service and advice from a lovely bubbly young woman who works on the till. Would recommend.

I needed to get a Covid and Flu vaccination together, before traveling, and Chemitex were able to give me a next day appointment and a good price.
The service was excellent and friendly.
I thoroughly recommend.

Initial appointments typically take 30 to 45 minutes. Follow-up or routine maintenance sessions typically last 20 to 30 minutes. The exact time depends on the treatment needed.
Bring a list of your current medications, any relevant medical history and the shoes you wear most regularly. Both socks and footwear are useful for the practitioner to review.
Typically, no. Most private insurers only reimburse treatment provided by HCPC-registered podiatrists. As our care is provided by FHPs, it is usually not reimbursable.
Most patients benefit from appointments every 6 to 12 weeks. Those with diabetes, complex nail conditions or recurring skin problems may need more frequent visits to stay on top of changes.
