Delay reasons

When You Might Want to Delay Your Period

Patients at Chemitex often seek period delay treatment. They usually want to travel, especially for beach holidays or pilgrimages. Weddings, sports events, and important exams are also common reasons.

Some women desire to avoid their period arriving unexpectedly. Take three 5 mg tablets daily, and if a dose is missed, take it when remembered; a 10-day delay requires 13 tablets. Religious observance is important for Muslim women during Hajj or Umrah. Menstruation can interrupt their worship.

You can delay your period for up to 27 days within six months. You may take a maximum of 90 tablets. Just confirm you’re not pregnant before repeating the course.

Norethisterone mechanism

How Period Delay Tablets Work

Norethisterone is a synthetic progestogen that mimics the hormone progesterone. Taking it boosts progesterone levels. This signals the body to delay shedding the uterine lining.

While you take the tablets three times daily, the lining stays in place and your period does not begin. When you stop the course, progesterone levels fall. Then, your period usually starts in two to three days.

The service is for women aged 16 and over. It is not suitable if you are on hormonal contraception. We cannot supply treatment if you have certain health conditions.

Norethisterone does not affect your fertility and is not a form of contraception.

How Long Can You Delay Your Period?

Most patients delay their period for between 10 and 17 days using norethisterone. The tablets are taken three times a day and continue to work for as long as you maintain the course.

Going beyond 17 days is not generally recommended without clinical review. If you need a longer delay, mention it during your consultation. Our pharmacist will help you decide what’s best.

Side Effects

Side Effects of Period Delay Medication

Most women tolerate norethisterone without significant problems. The side effects that do occur are usually mild and resolve quickly once the course ends.

The most commonly reported include the following:

  • Nausea or stomach discomfort, particularly in the first few days
  • Breast tenderness or swelling
  • Headaches
  • Bloating or fluid retention
  • Breakthrough spotting, more likely with longer courses
  • Low mood or mood changes
  • Reduced libido

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use period delay tablets if I am already on the contraceptive pill?

Norethisterone is not recommended alongside the combined pill. Running your pill pack straight through is a safer, more effective alternative.

Your next period usually arrives within two to three days of stopping the course. Your regular cycle typically returns to its normal pattern within one to two months.

Yes, this is one of the most common reasons women request period delay treatment. Book at least a week before your travel date.

It can still work, but the timing is less predictable. If your cycle is irregular, mention this during your consultation for tailored advice.

No. Norethisterone is not emergency contraception. It delays menstruation by raising progesterone levels. It does not prevent pregnancy.
