HPV & Health

What Is Human Papillomavirus and How Does It Affect the Body?

Human papillomavirus is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the UK. Most sexually active people will acquire at least one HPV strain during their lifetime, and the majority will clear it without knowing they were ever infected.

HPV is a family of more than 200 related viral strains. Low-risk strains, such as types 6 and 11, cause genital warts. High-risk strains, particularly types 16 and 18, can cause abnormal cell changes that, if left undetected over many years, may develop into cancer.

HPV 16 and 18 are responsible for around 70% of cervical cancers, and are also strongly linked to cancers of the throat, anus, penis, vulva, and vagina. The virus spreads through skin-to-skin genital contact, so condom use alone does not reliably prevent transmission.

HPV Vaccine Benefits

Importance of HPV Vaccines

The HPV vaccine is, in practical terms, a cancer prevention tool. It does not treat existing infections, but it protects against strains a person has not yet been exposed to, which is why earlier vaccination tends to offer the greatest benefit.

In England, the NHS school programme has already produced measurable reductions in cervical cancer rates among vaccinated cohorts. Adults who missed that programme or who received an older two-strain vaccine can now access Gardasil 9 privately, picking up protection against strains the earlier vaccines did not cover.

Vaccination at any age up to 45 can meaningfully reduce risk. Most sexually active people have not been exposed to all nine strains in Gardasil 9, so even a partial reduction in exposure is clinically worthwhile.

Dose & Schedule

HPV Vaccine We Offer at Chemitex Pharmacy

We administer Gardasil 9 (manufactured by MSD), which targets nine HPV strains: types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58. Between them, these strains account for the majority of HPV-related cancers and almost all genital warts caused by HPV.

The vaccine works by introducing virus-like particles into the body. These particles trigger an immune response and produce protective antibodies without using any live virus, so there is no risk of acquiring HPV from the vaccine itself.

Cost of HPV Vaccine

Each dose is priced at £165. There are no additional consultation fees, and the total course cost depends only on how many doses your age group requires. Call us or book online to confirm your schedule before your first appointment.

HPV Vaccine Schedule

Dosing is determined by age at the start of the course, not at each subsequent appointment.

If you started a course elsewhere, or previously received Gardasil 4 or Cervarix, speak to our team before booking. In most cases, an incomplete course can be completed with Gardasil 9 without restarting.

Safety & Side Effects

Side Effects of the HPV Vaccine

Most side effects are mild and resolve within 48 hours. The most common reactions are:

We ask all patients to remain seated for 15 minutes after the injection as a precaution against fainting. Serious allergic reactions are very rare; our team is trained to recognise and respond to them.
